Endangered species are animal popluations which are at risk of extinction. Sedentary species like crops or specialist species which inhabit small ranges or islands, or those with particular habitat requirements are particularly susceptible. Overhunting and habitat loss, together with competition with home livestock , are the main reasons for the extinction of the oryx’s wild inhabitants.
Of all the species who became extinct because of interference from mankind, the dodo , passenger pigeon , nice auk , Tasmanian tiger and Steller’s sea cow are a few of the more well-known examples; with the bald eagle , grizzly bear , American bison , Jap timber wolf and sea turtle having been hunted to near-extinction.
An endangered species’ extent of occurrence is lower than 5,000 square kilometers (1,930 sq. miles). Any preventative drugs programme for an endangered species, which will ultimately be released into the wild, needs to fulfil particular reintroduction requirements (Fig.

Continuing deforestation and rampant poaching could push some tiger populations to the same fate as its now-extinct Javan and Balinese relatives in different parts of Asia. With so many species at risk of extinction, the Arkive project is working to help raise the general public profile of the world’s endangered species, through the emotive power of wildlife movies and images.
